A Personal Journey Through the Tarot: Cups
Emotion
The search for happiness in life is often a confusing one. We are taught that true happiness comes when we find love yet truly unconditional love is rarely achieved. We are taught that happiness can be reached by loving what we do, yet so many of us can’t figure out what that is. We are told that happiness is the destination yet so few of us know the path. We are told money can’t buy happiness by the same people who tell us to seek security above all else. So few of us know the truth; happiness is a choice, not a destination. Even if none of your goals have been reached you can still choose to be happy. Emotion exists no where else but in the present moment.
The Suit of Cups tells the story of the emotional rollercoaster that is life. In our desperate search for this state of bliss we travel the maze that is our heart. This is not a circular journey. We pick and choose our emotional response in the moment. Is it love, or celebration? Is it yearning or grief? Is it dreaming of the past or dreaming of the future? Is it a desperate plea for a better experience or is it an overindulgent free for all? Doreen Virtue may have described this as knowing the Goddess but what she really was speaking to is finding happiness: “thou who thinkest to seek for me, know thy seeking and yearning shall avail thee not, unless thou know this mystery: that if that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee, thou wilt never find it without thee.” This is the secret of the Grail quest.
Today I contemplate the Suit of Cups and and revel in my happiness. The day my partner and I chose to take responsibility for our own happiness and not each other’s was the day our relationship bloomed. Since that day I have never put a restriction on choosing to be happy.
